Not all of man’s best friends are created equal.

Dog bites and attacks can be traumatic, life-changing experiences for both children and adults. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, they account for approximately 400,000 emergency room visits every year.

Pitbulls, Rottweilers and German shepherds often get a bad rap. Are these dogs the most dangerous breeds around? In a recent Yahoo News study, researchers explained that over the past 100 years or so, the title of being the nation’s most feared dog is always changing. Did you know that about 100 years ago, the Bloodhound held the title? The title passed to German Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers, Rottweilers, and now the Pit Bull.

The most feared 10 dogs in the United States include:
10. Dalmatian
9. Boxer
8. Presa Canario
7. Chow Chow
6. Doberman
5. Alaskan Malamute
4. Husky
3. German Shepherd
2. Rottweiler
1. Pit Bull

The following are three myths circulating about some of these dogs:

  1. Pit bulls are among the most aggressive breeds – This is false. Pit bulls actually rank second, only to Labrador Retrievers in terms of tolerance.
  2. Dogs in the ‘bully breeds’ are mean – These dogs include pit bulls, bulldogs, mastiffs, Staffordshire bull terriers, American Staffordshire terriers, boxers, and bull terriers. The semantics are misleading because the ‘bully breed’ title doesn’t refer to their temperament. These dogs were bred and trained to grip and hold bulls, bears and other large animals.
  3. Legislation which bans pit bulls from specific areas will reduce attacks – No organization has been able to provide evidence that laws pertaining to specific dog breeds make communities safer.

What does this mean? It means that the real issue with pit bulls is not their intrinsic personality traits, but rather their treatment by humans. The breed isn’t the problem – the owner is.

Statistics show that 80% of the hundreds of pit bulls killed every year were nice family dogs. Secondly, 84% of dogs involved in fatal attacks were neglected or abused. Finally, 86% of fatal dog attacks involved unneutered male dogs.

If you or a loved one has been injured by a dog, it is important to contact an experienced personal injury attorney for the help and compensation you need and deserve.

Call the San Bernardino personal injury attorneys at Welebir Law. Often, individuals are hesitant to bring lawsuits against negligent dog owners because they think the dog will be harmed. In many cases, this is false. However, it is critical that irresponsible dog owners are held accountable for their negligence.
