Ten lives were lost in a fiery crash involving a FedEx truck and a chartered bus full of students from Southern California. The fatal bus accident occurred yesterday, shortly after 5:30pm near Orland, CA.
The bus was one of three chartered to bring students from Southern California to visit the Humboldt State University. While traveling on Interstate 5, a FedEx freight truck crossed the center median and crashed into the bus chartered to transport the prospective Humboldt students and their adult chaperones. The vehicles quickly became engulfed in flames. The driver of the FedEx truck and the bus driver, as well as 3 other adults, died in the crash. Five of the students on bus were also killed. They have not yet been identified. According to a California Highway Patrol officer, over 30 other students from the bus suffered injuries of varying degrees of severity. Some suffered severe burns while some escaped with minor cuts and bruises.
The students on this trip organized by Humboldt State University were from multiple school and districts throughout the Southland. This has made it difficult to confirm who was in the bus involved in this tragic accident.
The bus involved in the deadly crash was operated by Silverado Stages. As for FedEx, a spokesperson has confirmed that one of its freight trucks was involved.
