Food Safety Tips This Holiday Season

With the holidays just around the corner, many people don’t realize that food safety is the most important ingredient in preparing for the holidays. The merriment can change to misery if food makes you or others ill.

The World Health Organization estimates that there are over 75 million cases of foodborne illness in the United States every year. Included in this number is more than 325,000 people are hospitalized while approximately 5,000 die each year.

You can keep your family safe from food poisoning by following a few holiday food safety tips.

Your holiday dinners can be as delicious as ever if you:

  • Keep everything clean, including your hands, surfaces, such as cutting boards, countertops, dishes
  • Rinse fruits and vegetables thoroughly under cool-running water
  • Make sure you don’t rinse raw meat and poultry before cooking – bacteria is likely to spread
  • Always cook to the right temperature to ensure that harmful bacteria is killed
  • Keep raw eggs, meats, fish, poultry and their juices away from other foods
  • Refrigerate your food within two hours

Who doesn’t bake cookies at holiday time? Cookies are a holiday favorite. It’s okay to use packaged cookie dough, but make sure you do bake them according to the directions on the package. Don’t eat raw cookie dough and risk the chance of getting sick.

Typical symptoms of foodborne illness include diarrhea, vomiting, and flu-like symptoms. They can begin immediately, hours later or even days later. They don’t last long in a healthy person, but can be severe for older adults, infants, young children or pregnant women.

These tips don’t apply just for the holiday season; they should be adhered to all year round.
