Every year, thousands of passengers board and deboard cruise ships from ports all over the country and world. Cruise ships provide travelers with a unique experience that is part luxury vacation, part stops at alluring destinations, and part fine dining and entertainment on board the ship.
Even though a cruise ship offers the best of all of these worlds, it also offers the opportunity for serious injuries as well.
Have you heard about the Italian cruise ship, Costa Concordia that crashed into rocks, killing 32 people out of a total of 4,229 people aboard?
According to a recent report, the captain of the ship blamed the helmsman for causing the accident. He stated, “I wanted to slow the ship down but the helmsman did not follow my orders correctly.” He said that the helmsman “steered the ship in the wrong direction and we crashed.”
The mistake caused a fatal delay in changing the ships course. The captain’s lawyers are asking experts to determine whether technical problems contributed to the disaster – now that the ship’s above water again. It was suggested that some safety mechanisms failed to function.
The captain is currently on trial in Rome for manslaughter and abandoning his ship. He was seen heading ashore while people were still trapped aboard. He believes that the ship owner should take its share of the blame for the deaths of the victims who were forced to jump into the freezing sea after a problem deploying lifeboats. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
My sincere condolences are extended to the families of the victims.
