Every year, thousands of people suffer food allergy anaphylaxis due to an undisclosed allergen, misleading product label, or the negligent service of a food to which they are allergic.
A 13-year old girl’s fun and adventure in summer camp stopped abruptly when she died in her father’s arms after eating a snack that contained peanuts.
The young girl was always careful about what she ate. She was allergic to nuts and made sure her food did not contain any. However, when she unknowingly ate a Rice Krispies snack made with peanut butter, she died from a severe allergic reaction to it.
The tragic ending to a beautiful young girl’s life came the other evening when the camp put on a social to end the summer. A table with snacks was placed in a dark area. She took a snack and had one bite. Realizing it contained nuts, she quickly spat it out. However, after about 20 minutes, she became ill, started to vomit and had trouble breathing.
She went into cardiac arrest and even though three epinephrine pens were used, she couldn’t be saved; she died at the hospital.
Food allergies are a major public health concern, especially among children. Statistics show that people with food allergies varies between two and ten percent of the United States population. According to a 2011 study published in Pediatrics, the Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the proportion of children with food allergies was found to be 8% or about 6 million. In addition:
- Almost 40% have a history of severe reactions
- About 30% have multiple food allergies
- Of food allergic children, peanuts is the most prevalent allergen
My sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of this young girl.
