Death At An Unmarked Crosswalk For 11 Year Old Girl

Pedestrian accidents are a serious problem in the United States. When cars run into pedestrians, serious injuries might occur. Did you know that more than 5,000 pedestrians are killed every year while thousands and thousands are injured? Statistics show that every 5 to 8 minutes a pedestrian is injured.

An 11-year old girl died the other night after being hit while crossing a street with her 8-year old brother. The young boy is still in the hospital.

The siblings were crossing the street in an unmarked crosswalk around 8:45 p.m. They were with an adult relative and five other children. As they waited at the corner to cross, three of the older children ran across the street. The girl and her brother then followed – into the path of traffic. They were struck by one car, the girl became airborne, after she landed, a second car struck her. Both drivers remained at the scene.

Investigators don’t believe alcohol and/or drugs were a factor. They are trying to determine who had the right-of-way by talking to witnesses. Apparently the lighting may be of concern. Were the children wearing dark-colored clothing and couldn’t be seen?

California law states that pedestrians can cross at the corner of any T-intersection or 4-way intersection. They may legally cross if it is safe to do so. Even when a pedestrian has the right-of-way, they should never assume that drivers can see them.

My condolences go out to the family of the young girl and I wish her brother a speedy and complete recovery.
